The upcoming Voidrunner's Codex for Level Up puts psychic powers front and center, and from what I've seen so far I like it. For another take, our own @Steampunkette released Paranormal Power for Level Up not long ago, and it's Great! Have an esper from that book in my current game.

I don't have an informed opinion about ToV yet, but largely compatible or not Level Up is not a 5e almost-clone.

We rolled for it every time, got it a few times, and used the monsters appropriately. In 2e and 3e I played psionicists or psions, or had them in my group at one time or another, and ditto for 4e, and now my hybrid Level Up-based game. Psionics has always been part of D&D for me.

Well sure, but that only works the way you say if you stop caring. I never stopped caring about the stuff in D&D to which I am now told I am irrelevant.

I'm not sure how true that is, actually. The 1e monster books absolutely integrate psionics where appropriate.

Like I said, wonderful to hear how little you matter regarding something that has mattered so much to you over most of your life.

It also gives the PCs realistic goals beyond, "save the world and be a hero", which in many cases are the assumed motives in modern gaming. Become king, lead the church, run the circle of archdruids, or become the master if my own thieve's guild are all on the table in domain play.

Oh sure. I thought you were speaking generally. Do the core books assume total newbies? The 2014 DMG didn't.

I'm a fan of top down design. I certainly don't think it's appropriate to be incredulous that anyone would use it.

I'd rather something be left behind as a historical reference than altered to fit what the cultural zeitgeist wants. Every time. Make new stuff if you want better stuff.

Seems clearly fantasy to me.
