D&D (2024) Maybe this is a bit late, but let's talk about Rogue's Niche, and What Rogue Should Be.

That bold bit might be a 4e reference that I'm missing, but I think it might have been closer to "people who misreads table 2-5 & criticize their misunderstanding" than grognards even if there is overlap between those two groups That's option 4 because there will be a wide range of PC...

D&D (2024) Maybe this is a bit late, but let's talk about Rogue's Niche, and What Rogue Should Be.

I didn't play starfinder long enough to see (or remember) issues with the operative over a couple isolated low level one shots. It could just be a don't see it much at level 1-5ish issue, but a lot of this comes down to 5e breaking the skill system by being too condensed and having only...

D&D (2024) Maybe this is a bit late, but let's talk about Rogue's Niche, and What Rogue Should Be.

No I think that the design problem goes beyond the feats themselves. The root cause lies in decisions like changing from +ability score at certain levels and +feat at others shifting to feat or ASI a pick one thing while getting rid of feat chain prereqs & pretending that the work of balancing...

D&D (2024) Maybe this is a bit late, but let's talk about Rogue's Niche, and What Rogue Should Be.

I ran a no feats game for a while (pre-xge iirc) with the intention of using bits of them for magic items and hope of encouraging build diversity. The end result was that everyone made the usual feat based builds seen all the time and just kept demanding the important bits...

That's the oversight, it's not just"some skills". Wizards for example have "some skills" they are good or even great at, except nearly all of them are low value niche ones with limited use or are an array of skills so overly condensed into a single choice that more classes than not can claim it...

D&D (2024) Maybe this is a bit late, but let's talk about Rogue's Niche, and What Rogue Should Be.

The 5e ogue shedding the restrictions on sneak attack & replacing them with what is effectively little more than "be part of a group" simultaneously robs them of their niche and makes restoring any particular niche a problem. There just isn't enough power budget to add more. Rogue is not the...

D&D 5E Escaping from (rope) bonds... What is your ruling?

Not so much for the realism as the fact that I don't want d&d focusing my brain on past dislocations 😱

D&D 5E Escaping from (rope) bonds... What is your ruling?

Pretty sure that I'd be more amenable to someone earing or cutting off the entire arm with the intention of regrowing with regenerate or replacing it with a prosthetic than dislocating joints. You get regular reminders that the joints don't reconnect quite right after coming apart that first time.

D&D 5E Escaping from (rope) bonds... What is your ruling?

I'm not sure why you quoted post 66 to say that, I've made more than one attempt to point you back towards what you are ignoring to grind an axe of player agency=success as they want it. Your scenario in 49 has nothing to do with the unquoted section of what was written & described in 46 &...

D&D 5E Escaping from (rope) bonds... What is your ruling?

This again goes back to you very strongly implying that the players are capable of succeeding by using their preferred method or that the agency players think they have is also the agency they want. The post you quoted mentions three different known scenario elements two assumptions and a...

D&D 5E Escaping from (rope) bonds... What is your ruling?

What if "the part where the PCs have agency" is while they are still tied up? Sometimes "exercising agency" involves recognizing the wall and admitting that you've got nothing and as a group are choosing to wait for some future point in time when there is a change to the scenario where they...

D&D 5E Escaping from (rope) bonds... What is your ruling?

Yes but the problems seep in through the cracks of the RAW wording once you accept that it's possible for a task to simply be impossible due to scenario elements that are ignored or currently unknown even if it seemed like a plausible task to the player

D&D 5E Escaping from (rope) bonds... What is your ruling?

Yes it does say that, but it says it as part of a larger section describing a process. That process is one where: Player declares they attempt a thing to overcome a challenge No matter if the GM considers it an impossible thing the next step is for the GM to call for an ability check. This is...
