    D&D 1E Favorite Obscure Rules from TSR-era D&D

I like the system from The Nightmares Underneath better. It's simpler and more playable and retains the randomness you like.

D&D 1E Seriously contemplating an attempt at a retro AD&D

It's inconsistent. The general rule of thumb for multiclassed characters is that you get to use all the benefits of all your classes. ie: Use the best save you have available, use the best weapons, best armor, best attack progression, etc. The obvious hole in your logic here is that...

Oh, to be sure! It's a bit ironic that it's the original and perhaps the truest example of a "cash grab" splatbook.

Delta had some good thoughts on this as well. These guys (and other OSR thinkers) have convinced me that it was an error for AD&D and later editions to nerf and then eliminate this rule, though I like the idea of having it scale so the ability isn't suddenly switched off when you encounter...

D&D 1E How do you play an illusionist?

It doesn't. I forgot to correct the running total when I changed where I put the ioun stone in the item order. I initially had it after the shield , so its +1 protection brought the running total from -8 to -9, and THEN Dex accounted for the other 4 points before the Cloak. I changed my mind...

Cavaliers are trash for all the reasons so eloquently specified above. I kind of dig the simplified Knight class for OSE Advanced, though. It retains just enough of the code of behavior to be dangerous to the character, having flavor without being unbalanced.

I'm not a fan of removing the ability of MUs to gain a new spell when training themselves to gain a level. IMO this is another place where 2E gives PCs an unwarranted downgrade. The original print of the 2E PH, page 81, is a little more obnoxious, in specifying that it's totally up to the DM...

    D&D 1E Favorite Obscure Rules from TSR-era D&D

Typo fixed, thanks. :) Fair question! It does not explicitly say so here. I infer it from a few things. 1. The phrasing- the magic-user adds the spell. This implies to me that it is a product of their research and study to gain the level. 2. They are not described as being granted one by...

TSR The Full & Glorious History of NuTSR

That part seems fraudulent AF. I have my fingers crossed that his documentation of that is not even vaguely in order.

D&D 1E How do you play an illusionist?

I'm not going to be any use for finding the lowest published baddie, but I know that for walking-around AC, a PC in armor can get to -15 with just the DMG or -16 with UA. Plate Mail +5 for base of -2, add a shield +5 to get to -8, 18 Dex* to -12, dusky rose ioun stone gets us to -13**, Cloak of...

The math for them was also borked, because they converted too-literally from the Chainmail charts. http://deltasdnd.blogspot.com/2021/03/the-big-mistake-in-weapon-vs-armor.html This is directly based on incidents from the source fiction, as is the chance of them screwing it up and accidentally...

D&D 1E Seriously contemplating an attempt at a retro AD&D

I mean, the text of the rules directly compares bracers to armor. The implication is that they function a lot like a magical version of armor, passively defending you. Bracers explicitly state that they don't combine and can't stack with armor, but that they do stack with other magical...

D&D 1E Seriously contemplating an attempt at a retro AD&D

Which is you or your group inventing a rule and imposing a new restriction not present in the published game. 🤷‍♂️ Once again you misunderstand, and your response doesn't address my point. A Fighter gets to wear armor and fight regardless of what magic items they find or don't find. Magic...
