D&D 5E Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

I agree with this and it does make for more flavorful characters. I have a homebrew method I use for rolling (modified from 1E) where you choose your class first and roll stats in order that leads to very high rolls overall.

D&D 5E Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

I don't know I am fine with levels 1 and 2. It is a bit wierd that Clerics, Sorcerers and to a degree Warlocks start with their subclass while other PCs grow into the role. Overall I like playing level 1 and 2 though. I will say this is when you are most likely to die though. Level 1 and 2...

D&D 5E Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

I could not agree more. In the first 6 years of 5E I never went above 16th level and rarely above 12th level. Since 2022 though I have played 5 1-20 campaigns and am playing another one right now. Every campaign I played so far started at level 1 (one at level 3), but we are going to play...

D&D 5E Which classes have the least identity?

Yeah, but I thought your point was ask anyone who has never played D&D about a Wizard or Sorcerer ... If you ask people who have never played D&D about a Cleric, Monk or Druid you are going to get Pope Francis, Saint Benedict and crazy Barbarians participating in human sacrifice during the...

    D&D (2024) What Should D&D 2024 Have Been +

Some do. I don't generally think they are good DMs. But like I said they get miffed when clever play wipes out the encounter too. I don't think this actually happens in play. I mean the option is available to everyone if it is available to someone. This has happened to me (many times...

    D&D (2024) What Should D&D 2024 Have Been +

Precedent for rulings is typically for things that are not covered or are unclear in the rules. If you say your game is RAW on spells or multiclassing and change that just to spite something a player put in their PC build because you don't like it, that is not setting a precedent. Then do the...

D&D 5E What Level To Hunt A Great Wyrm?

Crush is a harsh word but dice matter. We had a party of 6 PCs that beat Orcus (CR26) at 8th level. It was the campaign finale and it was supposed to be a situation where we encountered him at the end and had to fight for 2 rounds before the portal closed, but we were doing so good the DM...

D&D 5E Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

WRT racial bonus I don't like penalties and I do like being able to move them around. Adventurers are unique so while most Orcs might be strong and dumb in your game world and maybe NPCs even align with that stereotype to a fault, but your PC is unique and could be an outlier that was weak and...

    D&D (2024) What Should D&D 2024 Have Been +

Wel then what I said originally on this was correct. I said I have never seen a dislike of imbalance in play, if examples don't exist than that is a true statement. I have never seen a DM get upset about it. Never. Not in play and not on a stream. Further it would not be imbalance that is...

    D&D (2024) What Should D&D 2024 Have Been +

None of the posters I have seen on ENworld have provided examples of this. It is a prevalent theory on ENWorld, but when I asked for examples there are tyically very few or none. Also no one on ENWorld has ever provided an example of a streaming game that showed a problem because of imbalance...

    D&D (2024) What Should D&D 2024 Have Been +

But precedent is set in session 0. If you say we allow multiclassing, then you allow multiclassing including 1 level dips to get shield or Eldritch Blast or because you always wanted to be part Bard or whatever. If there are conditions on that they should be stated. further a "judgement call"...

    D&D (2024) What Should D&D 2024 Have Been +

It is a game. If players like it you should keep it. Why?

    D&D (2024) What Should D&D 2024 Have Been +

I have heard a few (very few) players talk about balance and imply that they might like a more balanced game, but I have never actually seen that displayed in play. I have a big aversion to the DM "putting his foot down" on anything. If you players want that option and it is in the rules why...

    D&D 5E Grappled

When I am playing a PC and I am grappling someone I usually do it by grabbing their hair (if they have hair). This way it explains all the thematics you are talking about.

D&D 5E Which classes have the least identity?

I'm not sure I agree with this. I think Cleric, Druid, Fighter and Monk would be very different than their stereotypical PC D&D representation. A Cleric is typically a religious non-combatant, a priest. There were catholic priest Warriors, but most of them would be conflated with Paladins...
